Contaminants & Chemistry

The Eurofins Food Feed Rotterdam Testing laboratory is located near the port of Rotterdam. Due to its convenient location, we can serve your large bulk shipments that enter the port quickly and accurately by ship. Whether it's animal feed, milk products, maize, palm kernel, herbs, chocolate, nuts or rice, processed or unprocessed products: we are flexible and can move with your demand. Handy, because storage in silos near the port will cost you a lot of money. And time is money too. That is why we are happy to assist you with research into contaminants, chemical analyses and organoleptic research.

 

Contaminants

When investigating contaminants, we check whether contaminants have unintentionally ended up in food products. This can happen, for example, during production, transport, storage or processing. Our lab specializes in research into mycotoxins. The best known are Aflatoxin or Ochratoxin, Deoxinivalenone and Zearalenone and Fumonisin ;. These are substances that are secreted by fungi and are carcinogenic. The law determines to what extent the substances may occur in food. For example, when transporting food in humid or warm conditions, the growth of fungi and the development of mycotoxins can be stimulated. Fortunately, you can exclude the presence of these substances with our analyses. In addition to mycotoxin analyses, the fatty acid composition (determining the type of fat), mineral oils and PAH4 analysis are also carried out in the department. We also carry out label checks for retailers, for example with regard to the quantity of saturated fats, omega 3 or omega 6. These are important parameters for many customers.

 

Chemical analyses

The Eurofins Laboratory for Contaminants & Chemistry provides chemical analyses in the field of oils and fats in products. Some of our analyses include peroxide, coagulation curve, solid fat content (determining the number of solid particles at certain temperatures; the melting point). We also measure, for example, how old or clean oil is on the basis of oxidation stability. Oil or grease is sometimes extracted from a product using chemicals. We test that there are no chemicals in the oil that are still flammable. Such information is useful if you are faced with choices during your production process. Suppose you know that palm oil melts at 35 degrees, then you can use that ingredient in the Netherlands if it needs to keep its texture; in hot countries this is not the case.

 

Organoleptic research

Unique in the Netherlands and scarce in Europe is our ability to perform organoleptic examinations based on microscopy. This means that we can test if there are no animal components in your products, such as insects, bones and feathers. We also detect dangerous weed seeds, admixture with grains or oilseeds. In fact, everything that does not belong to the product and of which you do not normally find out that it has unexpectedly ended up in your product. This is a solution for high-risk products such as animal feed. This way you can be sure that you are producing or selling what you think you are producing or selling. And that gives you a certain feeling of security.
