Recently the Norwegian TV broadcast the results of a study into the authenticity of tomato puree. It turned out that not all tomato puree actually consisted of tomato only, but that in a number of cases sugars were added. This product was sold as tomato puree. This led to a recall at least at 2 Norwegian retailers.
Tomato puree is a raw material that is often used in recipes. The fact that this is a fraud is not new; in the past, this product has been subject to counterfeiting in relation to countries of origin, but mixing with sugars has not yet been reported. It is therefore useful to check whether you are using tomato puree and what risks you run in terms of fraud.
The addition of sugars is relatively easy to investigate, Eurofins has developed a test in which this can be demonstrated.
