Energy label now also for food?

Just like for electronic equipment and homes, you can also determine an energy label for food. This fits in with today's trend, in which people live healthier and longer and often have an individually adapted diet. In the meantime, Hak has announced that it wants to provide their products with the Nutri-Score energy label from 1 September and AH wants to introduce this energy label for their online range as well.

Replacement

Nutri-Score is seen by various parties as the replacement for the 'I choose consciously' logo, which disappeared from the packaging more than 2 years ago. Unlike this logo, Nutri-Score takes into account all - both positive and negative - aspects of a food product, including fibers, proteins, fruit and vegetables, sugars, fatty acids, salt and energy.

Choice

On the basis of this calculation, a foodstuff, for example, will appear as green (A) or red (E). Nutri-Score has already been introduced in France, Spain and Belgium. A citizens' initiative has been launched in Europe. In the Netherlands, the supermarket umbrella organization CBL (Centraal Bureau Levensmiddelenhandel), the Consumentenbond (Consumers' Association) and foodwatch, among others, are promoting Nutri-Score. The Dutch food industry, united in the FNLI (Dutch Food Industry Federation), has not yet made a choice and is waiting. The government has not yet decided which logo should be used. In addition to the Nutri score, the Swedish keyhole system, the English traffic light system, is also on display. The government is also looking at how these models can be integrated with the Disk of Five

Calculation method

Producers who enter the energy label use the Nutri-Score method for the calculation. By entering different nutritional values in a calculation model, a score of A to E is obtained.
